Regular readers and followers of the band will know that it wasn’t to long ago that we were short of players and were actively recruiting. How times change. An influx of young talent from Brass Class – the bands training band – and the interest from others who have moved into the area now see the band almost at full strength. For those that are interested in making music with us will still be warmly welcomed. Being a non-competing band we are not restricted to a given number so the more the merrier. If you are interested in learning to play then Gail Denning and Verity Baker will be pleased to see you at Brass Class – every Monday from 7.30-8.30pm in the band room beneath the library. Please contact Verity Baker on Ottery 814502 for more information. If you have previously played then come along to our rehearsal at the Feeofee Rooms – behind The Institute – on Thursday from 7.30 to 9.30pm. We play a wide range of music from traditional brass band marches through to film, musicals and classical material. To find out more – and to make sure there is an instrument waiting for you – please call Brian Baker on Ottery 814502.

The summer activities are now distant memories and our musical director – Andrew Harris – has issued new music to challenge the band further and provide something new for our regulars. Andrew has made a huge difference to the quality and band repertoire encouraging us to attempt music we thought was beyond us. However a combination of patience and perseverance has paid-off and we get greater satisfaction and provide a more accomplished performance.

Our next major event is the Christmas Concert on Friday 20th December at The Institute. Together Brass Class and the senior band will provide an eclectic programme to include the opportunity for carol singing to satisfy all tastes. Make a note in your diary now to join us to start your Christmas celebrations staring at 7.45pm. Light refreshments will be served during the interval. Andrew has made a huge difference to the playing ability trying out music that is a little bit more difficult than we are used to and encouraging us.

Before then we will be helping out at The Carnival and with car parking at Tar Barrels. As a group of volunteers we rely on the generosity of our listeners so that we can update both our music and instruments. In addition to Tar Barrels we would ask you to support us by buying raffle tickets from band members. There are great cash prizes to be won and we are really grateful to our local Rotary Club for organizing this draw and for their support throughout the year.

Finally we would like to remind you that the band, and Brass Class, are available to perform at your special events. Please contact Verity or Brian Ottery 814502 to check out your dates and availability of band members and look forward to entertaining you in the future.
