Andrew began learning the Tenor Horn from age 9 with the Sidmouth Town Band. He then quickly moved onto the Tuba following an offer to join the Sidmouth College wind band and orchestra.
During this time he was a member of the Devon County Wind Band and Orchestra attending week long courses held at Rolle College, Exmouth, with intense tuition under the direction of course tutor Raymond Bolsover. He spent 25 years with his local band as a player and latterly, also as Assistant M.D.
During his time playing, he has had the privilege to play under such conductors as Dr. Roy Newsome, Derek Broadbent, and more recently Philip Harper. He has attended several conducting courses, receiving tuition from professional conductors and tutors.
In 1997 he was approached to become M.D. of the Honiton Royal British Legion Band.Following a successful and enjoyable period with the band; he wanting to develop his conducting further, so applied for the M.D’s vacancy at Tiverton Town Band. During his time at Tiverton he conducted the band at some very high profile concerts including a Memories In Brass Concert where a massed band of 60 players from many local bands attended and the concert was commercially recorded on to C.D. live, a D.V.D. was also made. The band was asked to perform in the film Blackball by its director Mel Smith. The band also enjoyed success at contest’s and won several prizes and awards in brass band competitions.In 2006 the band went on tour to Texas, USA and Andrew conducted at some major concert venues. After moving from Tiverton, he decided to take a break from banding. However, was immediately invited to join the Lympstone SW Telecoms band, where he spent an enjoyable time in the bass section. Following a 3 year break, he was asked to dep. at Ottery St. Mary Silver Band, to cover for their M.D. due to health reasons. Since when, he has accepted their invitation to become Musical Director.His enthusiasm and commitment have been well received; he is determined to raise the band’s profile and has exciting plans for the future. Andrew has struck the right balance of fun and hard work at rehearsals. Away from banding his other main hobby is Campanology and has been the Tower Captain at Sidmouth Parish Church since 1998. He is very much a family man, is married to Fiona and has two grown up sons, one of whom, Tom, has recently joined the Royal Marine Band Service.
